FAQ Answer

What happens if my child must miss the first week of the sailing program do to school?

Some schools are not officially over as of June 21st.  If your child can not participate during week 1 due to school, please let the program administrator know and we will include your sailor in our catch-up clinic the weekend of June 26th.

FAQ Answer

What equipment does my child need before the start of the program?

All sailors are required to wear a USCG approved life vest.  Water shoes or sailing boots (not crocs) are also required.  All participants should wear sunscreen daily. Sailors should arrive each day with a ditty bag which includes extra sunscreen, a towel and water.  Other optional equipment includes rash guards, sunglasses, hats and sailing gloves.

FAQ Answer

What are the criteria for the Junior Sailing Program?

Children must be 6 years of age by the start of the program and have completed kindergarten to start in our JY program.  Older children are welcome to start at the opti level and will be placed in the appropriate class.

FAQ Answer

Is there a waiting list for the program?

Our classes fill up quickly and most classes do have waiting lists.  It is best to register your children on the first date enrollment opens.  The dates are January 15th for SIYC members and February 15th for associate members.

FAQ Answer

Do sailors have to own their own boats?

Sailors in the JY 1 and JY 2 classes do not need to own boats.  All opti and laser sailors must own boats and opti 2 and above need top covers and a dolly as well. There are some rental boats available for 420 sailors.

FAQ Answer

Do parents need to be involved?

Yes!  It is expected that all parents will volunteer in some way.  There are many volunteer positions available from trailering boats to regattas, to volunteering at a club hosted regatta to serving as a parent of the day.  Contact the program administrator to find out how you can help.
